My brother gave me this Vornado heater as a much needed Christmas gift about a year ago. My brother researches everything he buys, usually using Consumer Reports and usually only buys when the object is rated very high and is a good value for the money spent. He told me that the main advantage to this heater was that if it tips over, it automatically shuts off. This is true. If you move this heater, it shuts off right away. This is a great safety factor.
I have diabetes and my feet get very cold. Unfortunately, I am also a voracious reader and a night owl. I read for many hours late at night while lying in bed. I don’t want to heat the whole house when I’m the only person awake so this year I started using the Vornado Compact Heater and Air Circulator, placing it about 10 inches from my bed and angling toward my feet.
It has done a great job off keeping me and especially my feet warm and toasty. The Vornator also circulates the air so that this small heater heats a nice sized warm area of about 3 to 4 feet. It gets so hot, I turn it off and then back on again several times although it is automatic and would do that itself if I used its thermostat function. It can also be used as a fan in the summer months so it is very versatile and a good, economic purchase. It is relatively light weight but very durable. I believe this is one of those rare products that will last for many years. And I’m happy to say my Vornado was made in Kansas! Made in the USA!
Even though I’ve used the Vornado Compact Heater almost every night during January, our electric bill was actually $4.00 less than our December bill. We are experiencing one of the coldest winters ever this year and normally my January electric bill would be higher than my December bill, even with the added cost of Christmas lights. A friend of mine found the same pattern. She is using area heaters more than ever before but her energy bill was less.
I did a little research. This heater uses a maximum of 1500 watts which makes it’s output like that of a 4 slice toaster or a microwave. If it were used for an hour a day for 31 days it would use $4.60 a month in electricity according to http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/howmuch.html. I don’t use it everyday although in winter when I do use it, I probably use it for over an hour but I gave away our microwave and we only have a 2 slice toaster, so it’s a luxury I can justify easily.
I am not an obsessive person but have to say that I’ve always been very careful and aware of electric heaters when they are plugged in and turned on. When I use one, I’m very vigilant about keeping things away from the heater, making sure it’s on something flat so that nothing can happen that might start a fire. I can honestly tell you I never worry about this little heater falling over although I am careful to keep things away from all sides of it. It is very well made and just about as safe as you’ll ever find. It has a small footprint as it’s about 12 inches wide and 5 inches deep.
