Winter is my least favorite season and I am constantly looking for ways to stay warm during these dreary months. The heat from the furnace isn’t always good enough and I find I often have to reach for a space heater to compensate for the difference. One heater brand I have grown to like is Holmes and one of its many different products is the Holmes HFH110U, a small portable space heater.

This space heater is relatively small in size, measuring about 11 inches in height, 7.5 inches in width, and 4.5 inches in depth. The body of this heater is gray in color and there is a built- in carry handle on the back to help transport from room to room. The heater is light, weighing only about 2.6 pounds.

Holmes HFH110U is a coil heater with a forced air design. There are two heat settings for this heater: Low (1000 Watts) and High (1500 Watts). There is also a fan- only setting that produces no heat but helps to circulate the air. A small red light located near the top of the unit indicates that the heat is on and/or the fan is running.

The front grill of this heater features vertical/horizontal grate design with a round- shaped open area where the heat flows through. The four- bladed fan, located just behind the protective grill, pulls the air through the slotted openings in the back of the heater where it crosses over the hot coils and is then forced out the front. If the unit gets too hot, there is an automatic shutoff feature for added safety.

Final Thoughts:

Holmes HFH110U is a very simple portable heater designed for use in small areas that need an extra boost of heat. This heater is compact in size and it fits easily in many small spaces. It doesn’t get as hot as some other heaters, making it safe to place almost anywhere, from a desk top to a laundry room floor.

I have used this particular heater a few times to keep warm and I have found that it is good for a confined area but not for anything very large. The amount of heat this space heater produces is good for an office cubicle, small bedroom (say, 10 ft by 12 ft max) or some other space that doesn’t require a large amount of warmth to get the temperature just right. For a small space, the heat generated is adequate to warm it up. But for a larger space, this heater isn’t adequate and the only people who will feel warm are those standing in close proximity to the unit. Even though this heater offers 1000 and 1500 watt settings, it doesn’t have a powerful enough fan to heat a large area.

One thing about this Holmes space heater that annoys me is its tendency to shut off. It’s good to have an auto shutoff feature because it does make it safe. If you leave a room for an extended period of time and forget that you had the heater turned on, there is nothing to worry about- it will shut off automatically. But the problem with Holms HFH110U is that it shuts off a little too easily and too frequently. Set on the 1500 (high) watt setting, the unit will only last about twenty to thirty minutes before it shuts off. When this happens, I usually unplug it and allow it time to cool off a little bit, which takes about ten minutes. Only then will I be able to turn it back on. Using the 1000 (low) watt setting seems to do the trick. It takes longer to warm you up, but it also won’t shut off so frequently.

The coils on the inside of this heater do not get red hot like those in other heaters. If you pick up the heater and look inside, you can see the coils and you will notice that they are not red or orange when the unit is turned on. This might be one of the reasons why the heat produced is not that hot. But the good thing about the more moderate level of heat combined with the plastic construction is that the outside of the unit doesn’t get hot to the touch. The plastic will get warm but it is never so hot that you cannot touch it without getting burned.

Holmes HFH110U doesn’t have a thermostat knob like other space heaters. The only options you have are high, low, and fan only. There is no way to set a thermostat and adjust it to just the right temperature. You either set it on high, or low, and let it run. The fan- only setting is nice because it basically turns the heater into a fan for use in summer. But the lack of a thermostat means you cannot adjust this heater and get the temperature in your room exactly the way you want it. You have to constantly turn it on and shut it off.

Holmes HFH110U also has no oscillation ability. The fan blows out the air in one direction only so the only way to change this is to manually move the unit from one place to another. This is among the many reasons why this heater isn’t suitable for heating a larger area. It doesn’t oscillate, so the heat is concentrated in just one direction.

Overall, Holmes HFH110U is one of the most basic, no frills space heaters I have ever used. All it offers is a High, Low, and Fan setting. There is nothing else offered with this heater but when you need warmth in a small space, it does get job done. It sells for about $15, making it one of the least expensive space heaters you can buy and it does offer instant heat without any waiting around for the coils to warm. It’s simple, it’s inexpensive, and it doesn’t generate a ton of heat. But it does offer a way to warm up a small space for very little money.
