The Honeywell HZ-708 we own, or the fifth one so-to-say was purchased at Menard’s in Germantown, Wisconsin. The heater is packaged well and surrounded by styrofoam on all sides. It comes unassembled but not to worry, it completes in two easy steps of attaching the bracket to the bottom of the heater and snapping the four wheels in place that come with it. Directions are easy to understand, clear concise and to the point. The heater is filled with oil and never needs to be rebuilt, refilled etc. The exact grade or toxicity of the oil onboard is not stated anywhere, which leaves it a mystery. Anyway, on with the rants and raves.
The heater powers up and has a bright display on the front and is easy to read and understand. One up and down button is for the level of heat you desire, or the amount of money you want to spend rather. Positions being 1,2 and 3. Meaning 600, 900 and 1500 watts. The middle switch is for the amount of hours you wish to leave the unit on, ranging from 1-18. The third is the thermostat setting, ranging up to 95 degrees. It can be a bit tipsy as the wheels are a bit small for it’s size, but a pull-out handle is mounted on the front underneath the control panel. Nevertheless, due to it’s weight and edges, use both hands or it won’t feel good on the toes when you drop it. The heater being primarily of steel, with a baked on finish should stand up for years if cared for properly. A 6 foot durable cord tops it off with a three prong plug on the end. They advise, and so do I to NOT defeat the third prong and adapt to an older two-blade style outlet. Instead, install one yourself or if you feel uncomfortable, call a licensed electrician. One strong benefit of the oil is that it stays warm LOOOOONG after the heater shuts off. One other thing to note, when this heater is functioning, the metal, which is just about all of it will be hot enough to BURN. Not blazing hot but it will burn you, kids, pets if rested against. Use proper discretion around kids or those with disabilities just to be safe. (As always, be safety concious when using this or ANY space heater.)
The heater is built well but unfortunately is malfunctions a LOT, and this is not to be taken lightly either. The thermostat on the previous four of them we have had heats up and then the heater does NOT shut off, letting this thing bake for as long as it wants. I have the receipts to back this up that we have exchanged this heater 4 times, and now have a fifth. The fifth one showed some promise but three nights ago, it did the same thing and we both woke up to a room about 90 degrees, when it was set for 72. After smacking the unit on the control panel, it proceeded to stop heating. We have stopped using the heater entirely and filed a safety hazard report with the Consumer Products Safety Commission. I have been a firefighter for 15 years and strongly recommend against this particular make/model of heater due to it’s malfunction and potential for overload. There apparently is NO overload safety device onboard. You may be asking why we chose this unit 5 times over? It’s built very well, but they get fiesty and the thermostats stick after about a month. This make/model of heater is actually not manufactured by or even designed by Honeywell, but Duracraft instead, as seen from many other products. Duracraft is I wouldn’t say a lesser brand but a cheaper brand whose products are a bit more disposable. Honeywell has been known for their products standing the test of time. Unfortunately someone else made this thing and they stamped their name on it, being a flop or not it’s Honeywell’s name that will suffer for it. There is a support phone number included but they go down a list of troubleshooting steps and are basically no help.
In a nutshell: The heater looks great, built even better. Heats up a room in no time, uses only what you need/want for wattage. Due to the nature of the malfunction with ALL FIVE OF THEM, once again as a firefighter for fifteen years, STEER WELL CLEAR OF THIS PARTICULAR MAKE/MODEL. When it is designed properly, maybe we’ll try them again. As for now, we’re done with them.
