It heats well and that’s about all. - LASKO Cyclonic Ceramic Heater with Adjustable Thermostat 758000 I purchased this heater for use in my dining room. I wanted something to give a little extra heat and at the same ...
The Lasko 5800 (or 758000) is an attractive heater that does look good but that is where the positive comments will end, it is an accident looking for a place to happen.
This heater is outright dangerous in that it takes less than three pounds of force (push with your pinky) and over it goes, yet that is where the fun just begins, even after tipping over the heater continued to run regardless of the heat setting.
Heating with this heater is as with many, thermostatically controlled ONLY when used in AUTO High Heat mode, there is no AUTO LOW mode and heating in the LOW heat manual mode requires you turn it off manually.
The only safety devices were an overload protector and smother shutoff…no tip over switch and the smother protection worked only when in high heat mode while low heat mode did still generate high enough temperature (180 deg) hot enough to melt the plastic around the screen and main body of the heater…and it just kept on running and running and running…flat on its back, covered with a cloth, melting itself down.
Tearing the heater down revealed all the workings and weight in the upper body of the heater and counter weights in the heaters feet which means they were aware of the top heavy condition from the start.
Finally, when the heater was disposed of another disturbing thing came to light, the plastic body burns with very little effort!
All in all, this is one of the worst designed portable heaters I have seen and would warn all users, if you have one be very careful, and if you dont have one consider yourself fortunate.
Looks like so many I have seen this year, cutting corners to be able to sell to the big box stores and our regulations so vague they are worthless…including the CPSC.
The only advice I can give readers is that this is a very wide spread problem including many brands not just Lasko, so if you need a portable heater be sure it has Tip over,Overload and Smother safety shutoff devices, thermostatic shutoff control at ALL heat levels and fire resistant plastic material.
Do NOT expect the ETL or UL safety markings to mean anything…they dont.
Update: 11/18/07
This heater remains unchanged for 2007.
