I purchased a Pelonis Disc Furnace Model HC-451 in September (via Ace Hardware on line) after extensively researching online and reading product reviews. I chose it because of its compact size (about 9 inches square), the fact that the company only makes a few kinds of products, and the relative safety of ceramic as opposed to other types of heaters. I was also attracted by the reports that the fan keeps running quietly even when the heat is off because the on/off shifts sometimes awaken my daughter. After a previous scary experience with a Bionaire BCH-4138 Ceramic Compact Heater last winter (see http://www.epinions.com/content_194791444100), I was really hoping this Pelonis heater would be better.
After a couple of weeks, however, we were very disappointed by the heater we received for one reason - it was never fully off even when the room was at or well above the target temperature. And I don’t just mean the fan continuing to run - there was still a small amount of heat emanating from the furnace no matter how warm the room was. And it was not just for the first few minutes following a time when the heater had just actively been on - heat continued to be blown out for as long as the furnace was on. This amount of heat was enough to raise the temperature of the room we have the heater in - a room that is about 9 x14 feet - many degrees given the chance - even with the thermostat knob set to the lowest temperature setting.
I contacted Pelonis customer service via email and at first was given a stock response that was cut-and-pasted from the FAQ on their website. When I replied and emphasized that this was not just a question of the heat continuing for a minute or two as the discs cooled, I was referred to the manager. No one would comment via email or over the phone as to whether the fact that the heat never turned off was a malfunction or just an engineering flaw. They told me I would have to send my heater in (at my own expense) and theyd either repair or replace it for me if needed.
Rather than send it in for an indeterminate amount of time with the potential that they would, in the end, tell me that that was the way it was supposed to work, I just purchased yet another ceramic space heater (a Honeywell brand ceramic heater this time) and returned the Pelonis to my local Ace Hardware store for a full refund.
