The Best Inexpensive Heater I’ve Found - Holmes Products HQH307 Open Flame Compact Heater I really like the Holmes HQH307 quartz heater. I use it to warm up my master bathroom in the morning. I turn it on...
The Holmes is a great little heater. I have previously had a Presto Quartz Oscillating heater and that lasted about 8 years. They discontinued making them. It was much taller than this particular Holmes heater and it oscillated. (Turned left to right.) So when I began shopping for a heater 2 years ago, I was looking for another Presto. There were none except the Holmes which was similar with its quartz tubes. Another customer saw me eyeing it. He highly recommended it and so I bought it.
It has a nice sculptured design and an attractive color. Its an off-white and blends into the room (assuming you have white walls.) This could be a good thing if you have company show up and you want to put it away but dont have time. Or, it might be a bad thing since you might knock it over unintentionally. But its noise factor will let you know its there. The first year I had it, it was very quiet. The second year those fans pushing out the heat and the reflectors in the back of the quartz tubes rattled to let you know they were working.
For a while I was having trouble finding a heater to warm the size of the area I needed: small kitchen, small dining area and average sized family room all in a U type shape. Some of the heaters stated the size of the room they would heat. I made the mistake of purchasing a small heater and it overheated under the strain of trying to keep the area warm. I smelled plastic melting and quickly turned it off. I found the plug somewhat melted. After 1 ½ seasons of use, it got tossed. So with some heaters you need to take room size into consideration when you purchase a heater.
Not so with the Holmes HQH307. This particular Holmes heater has a recycling thermostat and also will shut off automatically if it overheats. It is equipped with a GE motor and has been tested beyond UL Standards. How about that folks! A manufacturer that goes beyond whats required. If it has automatically shut off from being knocked over, it will not come back on again unless you place it in an upright position. If it has automatically shut off from overheating, you must push the red reset button on the back of the unit after turning the heat control off and after it has cooled for 15 minutes.
What I like to do just in case, is close off my three rooms as much as possible by opening the coat closet door in the family room and hanging a long coat from a hanger at the top of the door, and a long jacket from a hanger on the doorknob. This blocks most of the cold air coming from the hallway and other rooms at the other side of my house. When someone has to use the restroom on the other side of this door we tend to run because its freezing on the other side! Thats right, I dont turn my furnace on when I have the heater on, it works that well. Of course, if the temperature dips to below freezing then I also use my furnace but not as much. Im sure it would also depend on how drafty your home is, how windy it is outside and how often someone goes in and out of the house. The other thing I want to mention is that my home is on a slab so it is often cool or chilly, even in the warmer months. For example, it is now the middle of May in Indianapolis and the temperature in my home in the mornings is 67 degrees. Nice in the summer, not so nice in the winter.
I dont like to mess with the thermostat on any heater and I cant stand to hear the cycling on and off so I leave that knob set in the middle position. If the area gets too warm, I turn the heater off. I sometimes bring the heater into my computer room (11 x 12) and it heats it up fast. In 15 minutes I am usually suffocating and have to turn it off. There are two heat settings on the face of the heater: high 1500w and low 750w. I usually turn it on to high. There is a power light on the face of the heater that glows red when you turn it on. There is also a caution light below the power light that will also glow red if it comes on. They are far enough apart so that you will notice the difference and they are big enough to see from a distance (about an inch and a half in length each).
The metal grill on the front and handle bar across it are teflon coated or something like teflon although it doesnt state that anywhere on the box, the instructions or even the website: www.holmesproducts.com. This coating helps in cooling off both the grill and the handle bar quickly when you shut the heater off. It also has cool-touch housing but the front grill gets extremely hot and labeling warns you to keep all combustible materials at least 3 feet away from front, sides and even rear of the heater. They also suggest that you save the box which is sturdy and small to store the heater after season in a cool, dry location. Also, the quartz tubes can break. I had one break on my Presto heater so it’s a good idea to put it away in its box. Im about to do that right now.
