Introduction
This 2007-2008 Winter season, in December our condo central heating unit failed and it totally stopped completely. Isn’t that wonderful, things are broken when you really need it the most! Sometimes, bad things happen during bad times to make things worse. We called heating repair company to fix the system and they wouldn’t be able to come and repair the central heating for another 4 days, because they were really busy fixing other people’s heating system. I felt that I wasn’t alone in this world who was facing the same problem, but we had to buy something to heat our place temporarily.
Back in Southern California, when our heating system failed in the winter time, we could just wear socks, extra layer of clothes and we were fine, but here in Maryland, some people who wanted to save money on their heating bill by turning off their heater froze to death.
What Happened Next?
We went to the local Target right away that evening to look for a portable heater. My first choice of this oil heating system that was on sale for $19.99. We bought that one first. The oil heating unit was dangerous! I bumped my leg on the oil heating unit and my leg got burned and we have 5 years old daughter, so before she gets hurt. We returned the oil heating unit back to Target.
We went back to heating system area to search for a better unit. We saw the Honeywell HZ-385BP Ceramic Compact Heater. It was EXTREMELY expensive and it wasn’t on sale at all. We bought it for $69.95
Why did I buy it?
- First of all, look at the photo of the unit if you see the round thing in front of the grille of the heater. It is actually a warning sign that turns red when the heater is very hot and it will turn itself back to black when the heater cools off. That warning feature is very nice.
- One of the nicest features of this heater is the red light digital temperature gauge and the built-in blue light are located in front of the heater. You can read the digital temperature gauge in the dark at night.
- With the oil heating unit, most of its part is metal and when metal is heated, it can get really hot and it can burn your skin. There wasn’t tip over safety feature on the oil heating unit.
- The Honeywell HZ-385BP Ceramic Compact Heater, metal part is only the front grille part, but the grille never really gets that hot even thought the warning sign is red. Most of the Honeywell heater parts are non-combustible plastic. So if you bump your leg, your leg won’t get burned.
- There was an automatic shut off feature that can turn the heater on or off by either timer or temperature. You can set the heater on and off by certain amount of temperature or use the timer, like 30 minutes, 1 hours, or two hours. It works just like the thermostat, you can set the heat at certain point then the Honeywell heater will stop automatically, and when the temperature goes down below the temperature that you set, the heater will turn itself on again.
- The heater has a tip-over safety feature. When the heater falls off on the side, the unit will shut itself off completely to prevent fire hazard. Also, if the heather gets overheated, it will shut itself off automatically.
It is an Oscillating heater, it blows hot air and it can move from side to side. It works just like a fan, but it blows hot air.
- You can use 1500 WATT high or the E-Saver setting. The E-saver setting basically uses a lot lower amount of electricity power, but it heats the room slower than the 1500 WATT setting.
- There is a built-in sensor that detects objects such as towels or shirts. If your shirts or towels fall on the heater, the heater will shut itself off.
- I really like the style and the size of the heater. It looks very modern. It is very light and it doesn’t take too much space in a room.
What I don’t like about it
The Oscillating fan is loud, it is not too loud, but it is loud. The heater can only heat a small room! It can’t heat the living room. It is only good for a bathroom or bedroom. It is not recommended to use it in a bathroom because of electricity hazard.
The price of this unit is very high! It is too expensive.
Will I recommend this heating unit?
Yes, I will recommend this portable heating unit to anyone, especially the ones who have small children. The Honeywell HZ-385BP Ceramic Compact Heater is loaded with a lot of safety features.
Conclusion
The Honeywell HZ-385BP Ceramic Portable Compact Heater is a great heating unit that works great for a small room and for people who have small children around the house. This heater is great because it has a built-in timer and thermostat. Thank you for reading my review, I hope this review is very helpful to you in choosing the right kind of portable heating unit.
